Where is God when you are hurting? Why do bad things happen to people? Why do the wicked seemingly prosper while individuals who endeavor to be moral and upstanding citizens are consistently harassed, victimized, and even killed?
How do you explain the unexplainable for those searching for answers? Car accidents! Acts of terrorism! Divorce! The loss of one's job! A special needs child! Disease! All of these contribute to a sense of fatalism that God probably does not exist, and if He does He doesn't really care that much about what is happening on Earth.
It becomes painfully clear when we encounter suffering that we would prefer to be in charge. We want answers to our questions, solutions to our problems, and happy endings instead of tragedies. In this humanistic culture, man recoils at the notion that he is not in control and that God is.
Jesus' promise does not indicate the elimination of all suffering from our lives, but rather the confident assurance that He is with us throughout our pain. This is the hope believers have while in the midst of the crucible of conflict and the sting of suffering. Through the cross of Christ, there can be joy and contentment while in the midst of sorrow because Jesus has overcome death, the grave, and even Hell itself.
Suffering is real. God's sovereignty is also real. The believer can have hope that while suffering will occur in this world, the Most High God has overcome the world and all its pain. May our rest be in Him who remains the God of all comfort. Soli Deo Gloria!
