Great Sermons of the World: Christ the Cure for Troubled Hearts Booklet

Author: Charles Spurgeon

Charles Spurgeon was a self-made preacher with little schooling.

Born at Kelvedon, Essex, England on June 19, 1834, he began to preach at age 16. At 22, he was recognized as the most popular preacher of his time.

Four years later, he went to London where he built up a large congregation at what became the Metropolitan Tabernacle. Regular attendance numbered 5,000.

His actual sermons are far less interesting to read than those of the other great preachers. And he didn't exhibit the "delicacy and the graces of culture" as one source said.

Yet his powerful, fervent and passionate style showed through the millions of copies of his sermons distributed throughout his lifetime. His sermon on "Baptismal Regeneration" alone reached a circulation of well over 200,000.
