Through disasters God calls people to repentence. True repentence is confession of the specific sins. It is also having a contrite heart to truly hate sin. True repentence includes conversion. It is having such hatred for the sin that you stop it. God calls all me to repent and to turn to Christ in which there is forgiveness of sins.
