Dr. Barnhouse & the Bible

 1. I have studied the Bible faithfully and do my best to live up to its ethics. I honestly feel that my character is better than that of many Christians. Why then should I believe in Christ, except as an example, or come to God for salvation, when I can work it out for myself?

The Bible says you cannot work out salvation for yourself. “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us” (Titus 3:5). “By grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast” (Ephesians 2:8,9, KJV). You say that your character is better than that of many Christians. God never made any Christian His standard of righeousness. In fact, He says that those who compare themselves with any human being are not wise. “…they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise. For not he that commendeth himself is approved, but whom the Lord commendeth” (2 Corinthians 10:12,18).
The Bible says, moreover, that there is no one who is not a lost sinner. There never has been nor will there ever be a person who keeps the law perfectly. “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).  “For there is not a just man on the earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not” (Ecclesiastes 7:20).
