All Americans look back on July 4, 1776, as the day when their county was born, for it was on that day in Philadelphia’s Independence Hall, when the Declaration of Independence was set forth. Written by Thomas Jefferson and slightly amended by John Adams and Benjamin Franklin, this historic document has since been treasured by freedom-loving people throughout the world.
Perhaps best know are the words:  “We hold these truths to be self-evident: That all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness; that, to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.”
When we think of America’s bicentennial year, 1976, we would do well to recall the great principles on which this nation was established. But we would do well also to remember another declaration of independence which long preceded 1776.
