How Can I Know I'm Saved? Booklet

The Bible Study Hour

I'd like to talk about the love of God—not just that God is love, but that God loves us. If all we talk about is the love of God, we think quite naturally that there is nothing remarkable about it. After all, we're quite lovable. Why wouldn't God love us? He loves the flowers and the animals in the fields and in the forest; and naturally He loves us as well. But when you begin to see the nature of things as the Bible portrays them, you get quite a different picture because first of all we are made in God's image, His creatures, with a high measure of responsibility, indeed, better and higher than any of the animal kingdom. Secondly in spite of this noble beginning, we have sinned, we have rebelled against God, and we have ruined ourselves by our actions. Thirdly, as a result of our sin, we have brought ourselves into a state in which we deserve the wrath of God. Indeed, we're in danger of suffering the execution of that wrath unless something intervenes. And then fourthly in spite of all of that, Jesus Christ has come to redeem us by dying for us on the cross. You see, it's only when we understand that entire sequence that we understand what the love of God really is. Not something that we deserve, because we don't deserve it, but something utterly unmerited. Something the explanation of which is to be found only in God's character.
